He comes from a musical family; his father was a classical tubist and in his retirement still plays dixie-land jazz gigs around Atlanta. Joel completed his academic work at the University of Michigan, earning both a Masters of Music and a Doctorate of Musical Arts. His teachers include Michael Daugherty, William Bolcom, Bright Sheng, Will Averitt, and Thomas Albert. The September 11th tribute This Mourning—one of his most notable works—was commissioned by the Washington Chorus and is scored for 250 singers, full orchestra and a consort of 40 crystal glasses. This premiere took place at the main stage of the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. in late November 2006. Among his other notable pieces is his concerto for flute, flute choir, and wind ensemble The Shadow of Sirius, which was written to commemorate the loss of his child through miscarriage.[1][2] Puckett is the Chair of Music Theory, Ear Training and Piano Skills at the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University. Previously he taught at Shenandoah University and Towson University. Puckett also served a term as the composer-in-residence for the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras.[3] References1. ^{{cite web |last=Smith |first=Tim |title=On the Record: Bartok from BSO/Alsop; works by Joel Puckett, Larry Hoffman |work=The Baltimore Sun |date=May 18, 2012 |url=http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/entertainment/classicalmusic/2012/05/on_the_record_bartok_from_bsoa.html |accessdate=May 4, 2015}} 2. ^{{cite web |last=Gardner |first=Alexandra |title=Joel Puckett: Real Life Inspiration |work=NewMusicBox |date=March 19, 2014 |url=http://www.newmusicbox.org/articles/joel-puckett-real-life-inspiration/ |accessdate=May 4, 2015}} 3. ^{{cite web |last=Rhein |first=John von |title=Some delights among the duds in MusicNOW season finale at Harris Theater |work=Chicago Tribune |date=May 15, 2012 |url=http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2012-05-15/entertainment/ct-ent-0516-classical-musicnow-20120516_1_principal-conductor-cliff-colnot-cynthia-yeh-jennifer-gunn |accessdate=May 4, 2015}} External links
