Football careerBorn in Alcobaça, Lourenço started playing football in 1960 with local G.C. Alcobaça. After one season, he signed for Associação Académica de Coimbra.[1] In the summer of 1964, Lourenço joined Primeira Liga club Sporting Clube de Portugal, remaining in Lisbon eight years and winning the 1966 and 1970 national championships. He was a member of the Portugal squad that participated in the 1966 FIFA World Cup in England, but did not make any appearance in the competition for the eventual third-placed team, eventually being the only player called for the tournament that would never be capped.[2][3] Lourenço retired from football in June 1972 aged only 30, having scored 145 goals in 219 competitive matches for the Lions including 93 in the league. In a rainy afternoon in October 165, he netted four in a 4–2 away win against S.L. Benfica as Sporting went on to win the domestic championship; in European competition he added 18, only being surpassed many years later by Liédson.[4] References1. ^{{cite news|url=https://www.record.pt/futebol/futebol-nacional/liga-nos/sporting/detalhe/so-travacos-nao-traduziu-a-qualidade-em-golos|title=Só Travaços não traduziu a qualidade em golos|trans-title=Only Travaços did not translate quality into goals|newspaper=Record|language=Portuguese|date=29 January 2002|accessdate=20 October 2018}} 2. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.fifa.com/worldcup/archive/edition=26/teams/team=43963.html|title=1966 FIFA World Cup England ™ – Portugal|publisher=FIFA|accessdate=5 February 2010|deadurl=yes|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20131031011900/http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/archive/edition%3D26/teams/team%3D43963.html|archivedate=31 October 2013|df=}} 3. ^{{cite news|url=https://expresso.sapo.pt/desporto/2016-07-13-A-lenda-dos-Magricos-comecou-ha-50-anos|title=A lenda dos Magriços começou há 50 anos|trans-title=The legend of the Magriços started 50 years ago|newspaper=Expresso|language=Portuguese|date=13 July 2016|accessdate=25 May 2017}} 4. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.zerozero.pt/text.php?id=98&theme=10&caderno=113|title=Lourenço: o homem do Poker na Luz|trans-title=Lourenço: pokerman at the Estádio da Luz|publisher=Zerozero|language=Portuguese|date=17 November 2011|accessdate=20 January 2012}} External links
