Beersel Castle ({{lang-nl|Kasteel van Beersel}}) a medieval castle located in Beersel, Flemish Brabant in Belgium. First built in 1300–1310 and subsequently restored on a number of occasions, it was built under the auspices of the Duchy of Brabant to the south-west of its major city, Brussels. It was built largely in brick on a roughly circular plan, and has three large guntowers. It is surrounded by a large water-filled moat. It is considered one of Belgium's best preserved castles.

History

Construction and history

Beersel was located at the frontier of the Duchy of Brabant with the County of Hainaut, near Brabant's principle city of Brussels. It was built between 1300 and 1310 by Godefroid of Hellebeke, the first known Seigneur of Beersel, under the auspices of Jean II, Duke of Brabant. By the end of the 14th century, the ownership of the castle has passed to the Seigneurs of Wittem. In 1356 the castle was burnt by soldiers from the County of Flanders, led by Louis of Male, during the War of the Brabant Succession (1356–57).

Henry III of Wittem supported Emperor Maximilian during the revolts of 1483–1492, placing him at odds with Brussels which supported the rebellion. Beersel Castle was besieged by Brussels rebels twice in 1488 and 1489, after which it was finally captured. However, the collapse of the rebellion soon afterwards meant that the fortress was soon returned to the Seigneur of Wittem. It was restored between 1491 and 1508 at the expense of Brussels, on Maximilian's orders. The three horseshoe artillery towers date to this phase of the construction. After the extinction of the Wittem line, the castle passed to other families.

A tiled roof was added to the castle in the 17th century, but by the 18th century it had become unoccupied. In 1818, a cotton factory was established in the castle's ruins. The property passed through a series of marriages to the Stalle, Witthem, Arneberg, and Merode families. In 1877, the French poet Victor Hugo visited and penned a verse about the castle ruins.

Restoration

In 1928, a member of the Merode family donated the castle to the League of Friends of Beersel Castle which conducted a restoration. Since 1948 it has been the property of the Royal Association of Historic Residences and Gardens in Belgium (Koninklijke Vereniging der Historische Woonsteden en Tuinen van België) which has since leased it to the municipal authorities of Beersel. The castle is open to the public, and has been subject to a government-supported restoration project since 2007.[1] It is located near to the E19 motorway.

In popular culture

Beersel castle is the subject of a poem by Victor Hugo. It is also the setting for De schat van Beersel ("The Treasure of Beersel"), a story in the Spike and Suzy (Suske en Wiske) comic book franchise.
