It is situated near the confluence of the Otava and Blanice rivers. The municipality covers an area of {{convert|20.08|km2|sqmi}}, and has a population of 626 (as at 2005). Kestřany lies approximately {{convert|6|km|mi|0}} south-west of Písek, {{convert|44|km|mi|0|abbr=on}} north-west of České Budějovice, and {{convert|95|km|mi|0|abbr=on}} south of Prague.
