Kotla Sarang Khan is a village located in Kharian Tehsil, Gujrat District in Punjab Province of Pakistan. The nearest town is Lalamusa about seven kilometers to the Northeast. The village has a population of almost ten thousand and holds two seats in the local area government union council. Residents are mostly farmers but some are fortunate enough to find manual labor jobs in Middle East allowing them to send back money to their families. A few residents of the area have moved to cities for better education of their children and for the good of their family. HistoryMost popular traditions hold that the first native of the village was a person named as Sarang Khan who settled in the area in the sixteenth century during the famous Band-O-Bast by Mughal Emperor Akbar. And from that time now village's population has been increasing at a very slow pace. Even creation of Pakistan made no difference and there was no demographic change at all because all of inhabitants were followers of Islam. But after Afghan war there were Afghan immigrants who chose to stay here and few of them are still living with their families in neighborhoods. Basic amenitiesElectricity and telephone service are now provided to this remote village after long effort by village residents. Broadband facility is also available to residents. People with no land-line access in remote places can avail high speed internet through PTCL's wireless 3G service "EVO". Nearest health center is Rural Health Centre about 3 miles away. Currently there are rumors about the establishment of a Local Hospital. EducationKotla has middle schools for boys and girls. The nearest high school is in Lalamusa. Criticism against educationWorld is abundant with critics so is Kotla Sarang Khan but one thing that makes this village's critics different is that they criticize modern education and like to speak against it whenever and wherever given a chance, any body can avail this opportunity repeatedly to get an estimate of his tolerance and control over emotions and to know how much guts he has got to take part in a debate than can last for hours and even days. What makes it interesting is that these critics like to use privileges of modern society like electricity, telephony and all industrial products but will not step back unless the person who supports education either accepts defeat or cuts his own throat. They have one motto, to live in stone age with all modern facilities in a backpack. PoliticsLike anywhere else in rural areas of Pakistan people here in this village also follow caste system while using their right to choose their representatives. Lack of political development in Pakistan and repeated invasion by dictators has left impact on residents of this village too and this can be viewed by knowing political views of residents and conspiracy theories that they follow. Lack of any political development has strengthen old traditional caste system over the decades. This can be understood by following example, Every time when elections are held people cast their vote against short term benefits or to person recommended by their elders but later they either curse politicians or pray for military invasion and praise previous government for the rest of the term until next elections are held. But recent developments in communication and telecoms sector is gradually raising political activism and awareness among local residents. 1 : Populated places in Gujrat District |
