Kupwara is a town and a municipal committee in Kupwara District in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. The nearby Lolab Valley and Bangus Valley, are of great interest to tourists.

Demographics

{{As of|2011}} India census, Kupwara had a population of 870,354.{{citation needed|date=August 2017}} Males constitute 61% of the population and females 39%. Kupwara has an average literacy rate of 64.51%, above the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 64%, and female literacy is 41%.{{contradict-inline|reason=the average of male and female rates cannot be nearly identical with the male rate|date=August 2017}}.In Kupwara, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.

People

A majority of the people are Muslims while there is a small community of Hindus and Sikhs in both Kupwara and Handwara tehsils. Kashmiris are the major ethnic group and speak the Kashmiri language.

Education

The district has 5 colleges, 30 Higher Secondary Schools, and 2000 educational institutions. Govt Degree College, Kupwara is the largest college in the district with total enrollment exceeding 10,000.
