KwaZulu-Natal is designated as a geographical unit under the Wine of Origin classification of South African wine. It corresponds to the province of KwaZulu-Natal in the east of South Africa, which has an embryonic wine industry. HistoryThe first trials of Vitis vinifera in KwaZulu-Natal were in 1992 at Sunwich Port.[1] Tiny and Judy van Niekerk established the Stables Wine Estate in 2005, the first wine estate in KwaZulu-Natal, and released the first wines from the region in 2006. Judy van Niekerk was responsible for having KZN designated as a "Wine of Origin" region in 2005 after negotiations with SAWIS.[1][2] Owners and winemakers Ian and Jane Smorthwaite bought their farm Abingdon Wine Estate in 2000 and the first vines were planted in 2004. Situated at 1100m above sea level, Abingdon Estate has in excess of 2ha under vine. Judy van Niekerk approached the KZN Government in 2007 with a proposal to fund vineyard plantings in the Tribal regions of the province, creating job opportunities in under-resourced regions. This project commenced in 2009 with newer plantings of 10ha at Ballito on the KNZ north coast. These vineyards are cultivating the French-American hybrid Villard Blanc, a grape cultivar that thrives in warm, humid conditions.[3] The first wines of this were produced in Sept 2013 under the banner of iLembe Co-operative Winery. In 2006, Rudi Kassier established vineyards on Highgate Farm, in the Dargle Valley of Kwa Zulu Natal. Under Highgate Estate, Kassier became the first wine grower in the region to have a Chardonnay certified by the Wine and Spirit board of South Africa, in 2010. The wine was well received by the public, and lauded with 4 stars by the John Platters guide. The estate now boasts a fully fledged cellar and tasting room, with a wide variety of wines on offer, including the South African favorite: pinotage. Highgate is also the first residential wine estate in the region. The latest producer to register with SAWIS is Cathedral Peak Wine Estate. It currently has 27ha planted of Pinotage, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. This is the only larger scale wine holding in the province. The flagship label of the estate is Unesco-985. This label recognises the uniqueness of the area and its status as a World Heritage Site. In particular, the estate is focused on zero footprint operations much like their predecessors, the San. Since its first plantings in 2007 Cathedral Peak has developed into an award winning estate. It has won numerous medals and awards with the highest award being the Michelangelo trophy for its 2015 Barrel Pinotage. See also
