Its three-tiered Sanju Pagoda, the Kinkaku-ji Temple, and Mirror Gardens are fine examples of Japanese traditional-style structures and gardens built outside Japan. The gardens were listed in the National Register of Historic Places as site 04000020 on February 11, 2004.[2] Honolulu Memorial Park was established in 1958, and its Buddhist Kinkaku-ji memorial and Sanju Pagoda were constructed between 1964-1966 as part of the Nu{{okina}}uanu Memorial Gardens Funerary Home, adjacent to history Oahu Cemetery. This name was changed to Kyoto Gardens in 1966 when the City of Kyoto, Japan, donated a bronze bell, with Abbot Jikai Murakami of Kyoto's Kinkaku-ji present for the opening.
Both the Sanju Pagoda and Kinkaku-ji serve as columbariums. As of 2006 they were in poor repair, due to the cemetery's financial difficulties.[4][5] References1. ^{{NRISref|2009a}} {{National Register of Historic Places}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Kyoto Gardens Of Honolulu Memorial Park}}2. ^{{cite web|author=Lorraine Minatoishi Palumbo |url={{NRHP url|id=04000020}} |title=Kyoto Gardens of Honolulu Memorial Park nomination form |work=National Register of Historic Places |publisher=National Park Service |date=July 1, 2003 |accessdate=2009-11-15 }} 3. ^{{cite web |url= http://www.cr.nps.gov/nr/feature/asia/2004/kyoto.htm |year=2004 |publisher= National Park Service |title= Kyoto Gardens of Honolulu Memorial Park |work= Asian Pacific American Heritage Month }} 4. ^{{cite news |title= Pagoda crumbling amid dispute |url= http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2006/Jan/05/ln/FP601050339.html |author= James Gonser |newspaper= Honolulu Advertiser |date=January 5, 2006 |accessdate= 2009-11-28 }} 5. ^{{cite news|url=http://www.hawaiireporter.com/storyPrint.aspx?ac213dc7-8d9b-47c8-b885-612e8015f72f |date=October 9, 2006 |author=Malia Zimmerman |title=Memorial Park Management Dispute 'Emotional, Political, Messy' |newspaper=Hawaii Reporter |accessdate=2009-11-28 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20061030083108/http://www.hawaiireporter.com/storyPrint.aspx?ac213dc7-8d9b-47c8-b885-612e8015f72f |archivedate=October 30, 2006 }} 7 : Cemeteries in Hawaii|Cemeteries on the National Register of Historic Places in Hawaii|Buildings and structures in Honolulu|Japanese-American culture in Honolulu|Japanese gardens in the United States|Tourist attractions in Honolulu|National Register of Historic Places in Honolulu |
