HistoryThe district was at first a minor district (king amphoe) named Khao Kaeo (เขาแก้ว), which was a subordinate of Mueang Nakhon Si Thammarat. When the district office was moved to tambon Lan Saka, the district was renamed accordingly. In 1958 it was upgraded to a full district.[1] GeographyNeighboring districts are (from the north clockwise) Phrom Khiri, Mueang Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phra Phrom, Ron Phibun, Thung Song, Chang Klang, Chawang and Phipun. Khao Luang National Park is in Lan Saka District. AdministrationThe district is divided into five sub-districts (tambon), which are further subdivided into 42 villages (muban). Lan Saka is a township (thesaban tambon) which covers parts of tambon Khao Kaeo. There are a further five tambon administrative organizations.
Points of interestBan Khiri WongBan Khiri-wong (Thai : บ้านคีรีวง) is an ancient community in Lan ska district located in the middle of mountain ranges and rivers for over 200 years. The locals lead their life humbly in a clan society and follow the philosophy of sustainable development. It is surrounded by beautiful, rich, and attractive natural resources which include mountains, waterfalls, flora and fauna. The villagers take a living mainly from Suan Som-rom, plantations that grow fruit such as mangosteen, rambutan, durian and parkia. The collaborative labor divides people in this community into groups according to their professional skills, namely tie-dyeing, herbal products, coconut shell weaving, juice processing, winery and durian paste. Popularity among consumers and tourists has been gained by the products from each group. These local souvenirs are sold at a rational price and they are also top quality. Baan Khiri-wong is known as Thailand’s best holiday destination which is based on the air quality evaluation conducted by the government’s Pollution Control Department.[2] It has become a place where people come to fill their lungs with ozone and enjoy a quality travelling experience.
