It has long been one of Italy's top-selling magazines.[1] HistoryLa Settimana Enigmistica was created by a Sardinian nobleman, Giorgio Sisini, count of Sant'Andrea and the son of the founder of the Rotary Club of Sardinia. Sisini died in 1972 and production of the magazine was taken up first by Raoul De Giusti and then by Francesco Baggi Sisini. The first edition of the magazine was published on 23 January 1932 and featured the Mexican actress Lupe Vélez on the front cover. The magazine has featured puzzles contributed by the most famous puzzle-setters, including its founder, who created puzzles for readers up until the last few days of his life. One of the footers on the front page of the magazine states è il settimanale che vanta innumerevoli tentativi di imitazione ("it is the weekly magazine that boasts countless attempts at imitation"). Indeed, numerous other publications have followed in the wake of its popularity. One characteristic that makes La Settimana Enigmistica unique is that it does not accept advertising and, formerly at least, rarely uses it to sell the magazine. In November 2008, it reached the milestone of 4,000 editions and, to celebrate this fact, the preceding five issues carried a competition dedicated to Italy. LayoutThe layout of the magazine has remained the same for several years. The heading on the cover is in one of three colours: blue, green, or red, the colours cycling in this order. The front cover always features a crossword grid with an inset photograph of a personality from the world of entertainment, sport, music, theatre or cinema. Even-numbered editions feature a male personality, while odd-numbered issues feature a female personality. Since 1995, some of the illustrations in the magazine have been printed in colour. PuzzlesMany of the puzzles featured in La Settimana Enigmistica are crosswords. A number of these (usually the level entry ones) use an American-style grid (one containing few black squares). As well as crosswords, the magazine contains many other types of puzzle, including:
Every week there is at least one competition, with an annual special in December. One feature that makes the magazine attractive to collectors and puzzlers is the rigorous numbering of all its puzzles. This numbering system facilitates looking up the solutions, which are normally included in the following issue (the solutions to competitions are published three issues after the competitions appear). Comic stripsAs well as the above, many pages carry a cartoon, and there are also whole pages dedicated to humour, with comic strips and jokes from regular contributors. Some of the strips have ongoing themes, such as:
