Le Grand Bleu is one of the largest private yachts in the world at {{convert|113|m|ft|adj=on}} in length.[2] She was built at the Bremer Vulkan yard in Bremen, Germany, and was launched in 2000. She was designed by Stefano Pastrovich and constructed by Kusch Yachts.[3] She was previously owned by John McCaw, Jr., an American businessman, who sold her to Russian businessman Roman Abramovich in 2002. Abramovich had her refitted to his own preferences by HDW in Kiel, Germany. This included an internal refit and the addition of a {{convert|5|m|ft|adj=on}} swim platform. In June 2006, Abramovich gave Le Grand Bleu in a gamble to her current owner, friend and business partner Eugene Shvidler. Le Grand Bleu is powered by two 9,730 bhp Deutz engines.[4] Details about the interiors are scanty as Abramovich is protective of his family's privacy and highly security-conscious, but they were designed by Terence Disdale. HistoryAfter departing the yard, Le Grand Bleu headed for the Mediterranean. She was in Monaco in May 2004, serving as a base for Abramovich during Chelsea F.C.'s fixtures against AS Monaco in the UEFA Champions League. The yacht needed work when she visited New Zealand over the Christmas New Year period of 2006/7. The work was carried out by Yachtwork. She had a mini refit in Port Canaveral, FL in 2008. This refit included a new "green" wastewater treatment system in addition to the current Lloyd's certified system. The new treatment system allows the ship to reuse the wastewater after treatment rather than discharging the wastewater overboard into the sea. The boat also boasts two additional yachts on individual cranes that she carries on the topside of the aft of the boat - one is a {{convert|73|ft|m|adj=on}} sailboat (on the port side), and the other is a {{convert|68|ft|m|adj=on}} powerboat (on the starboard side). The boat completed her 10-year survey work at Peters Schiffbau, Wewelsfleth, Germany. The addition of a new beach club on the port side being the main modification. The hull was also repainted. In June 2017, an extended anchorage in New York Harbor, where it obstructed certain views of the Statue of Liberty, attracted media attention.[5] By July, the yacht's mooring had relocated to open waters in Raritan Bay.[6] The yacht spent part of July moored in the Penobscot Bay, Maine, outside of Camden harbor. In early August, 2017, it was anchored in Casco Bay, near Portland, Maine. In mid-August and early September the yacht was anchored in Frenchman Bay, east of Mt Desert Island, Bar Harbor, Maine.
