It is endemic to the Okinawa Island, Japan.[2] It is named after Motoyoshi Namiye, a Japanese naturalist and herpetologist.[3] Its common name is Okinawa wart frog or Namiye's frog;[2][3] the latter name is also spelled Namie's frog.[4] Its natural habitats are upstream regions in primary broad-leaved evergreen forest.
