Linacre is an English surname that derives from the Old English words Lin meaning flax and Aecer meaning cultivated field.

The surname was first found in Cheshire where they were Lords of the manor. In the Domesday Book a Godwin de Linacra is listed as a Norman Baron.

The Linacre family was also prominent in the villages of Hackenthorpe and Eckington in Derbyshire in the 13th and 14th Centuries
