In India, many traditional place names were changed in India during British rule, as well during the earlier Muslim conquests. Ever since the British left India in 1947, many cities, streets, places, and buildings throughout India have been changed back to their original names over the decades. Certain traditional names that have not been changed, however, continue to be popular.
