It has a population of 634 as of the 2011 UK census, 87.5% of whom are Welsh-speaking,[1] formerly located within the hundred of Moyddyn.[2] The community is located at the southernmost area of Ceredigion's former lead and silver mines, which until the 1760s were highly productive. Clydogau refers to the River Clydogau or Clywedogau as it was originally spelt. The meaning of "clywedog" is audible, or noisy. The basins of Clywedog-isaf, Clywedog-ganol and Clywedog-uchaf are nearby.[1] There are two churches still in regular use, Saint Mary's Parish Church[3][4] and the Welsh Independent Capel Mair, built in 1825,[2] which is a Grade II listed building.[5][6] Both churches have recently received improvements.[7] Local native and scholar G. J. Williams, (1892–1962), was the first president of Yr Academi Gymreig (Welsh Academy).[1] {{clear}}Footnotes1. ^1 2 The Welsh Academy Encyclopedia of Wales. p. 487 2. ^1 GENUKI: Llanfair Clydogau 3. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3594649|title=Church of St Mary, Llanfair Clydogau (C) John Lord|website=www.geograph.org.uk|accessdate=19 August 2018}} 4. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.churchinwales.org.uk/structure/places/churches/?id=2597|title=Churches - The Church in Wales|website=The Church in Wales|accessdate=19 August 2018}} 5. ^{{cite web|url=http://map.coflein.gov.uk/index.php?action=do_details&numlink=7296 |title=Capel Mair Welsh Independent Chapel, Llanfair Clydogau - Coflein |website=www.coflein.gov.uk |accessdate=19 August 2018}} 6. ^{{cite web|url=https://britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/300018759-capel-mair-llanfair-clydogau|title=Capel Mair, Llanfair Clydogau, Ceredigion |first= |last= |website=britishlistedbuildings.co.uk |accessdate=19 August 2018}} 7. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.cambrian-news.co.uk/article.cfm?id=101553&headline=Llanfair+Clydogau§ionIs=news&searchyear=2016|title=Llanfair Clydogau|publisher=|accessdate=19 August 2018}} References
