They were designed by Nigel Gresley and introduced in 1926. A total of 35 were built and they were used in Scotland. All passed into British Railways ownership in 1948 and they were numbered 65900-65934. The J39 was a later development, exchanging the J38's {{convert|4|ft|8|in|3|abbr=on}} driving wheels with larger {{convert|5|ft|2|in|3|abbr=on}}, 289 J39s being built.
