BackgroundHis father is Luke Robert White, 5th Baron Annaly and his mother Lady Marye Isabel Pepys. They divorced in 1956 when White was two years old and she died in 1958. He was educated at Eton College and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. He was commissioned to the rank of Lieutenant in 1974 in the service of the Royal Hussars. He also attended the Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester where he gained a Diploma in Rural Estate Management. Annaly married Caroline Nina Garnett (born 1960), daughter of Colonel Robert Hugh Garnett and Elizabeth Ann Arthur, in 1983. They have four children, including his only son and heir apparent, Luke White (born 1990), his daughters; Lavinia White, Iona White and Clemmie White. Following their divorce, Lady Annaly married Richard Bott of Taunton in 2015. [1] He succeeded in his family's peerage, created in 1863, on 30 September 1990. He is a local steward for the British Horseracing Authority at Wolverhampton, Warwick and Towcester racecourses. Politics
He served briefly as a Lords' whip in 1994 in the Conservative government of John Major and was accountable to Parliament for specific roles in the Home Office and Ministry of Defence. Annaly was a Lord-in-waiting in 1994. Lord Annaly has to date remained among the bulk of hereditary peers (92 at any time sit) not to have sat in the House of Lords (the less powerful chamber) following the Act of 1999. At pro-hunting demonstrations in September 2004 Annaly spoke in favour of continuation of hunting on the BBC stating it is no longer an elitist activity; "I fear it is being done for good, old-fashioned misconceived ideas about the sort of people who go hunting. People have come from all over the country and all sections of society. It's no longer a privileged exclusive activity." He refuses to be drawn into debate around suffering of hunted animals.[2]
From 2007-2011 Annaly was the Councillor for a single-member ward of Cherwell District Council as a Conservative ousting an incumbent Liberal Democrat.
