He also served as head coach at St. Mary's College (CA), Iowa State, Central Missouri State, and Southwest Baptist University. He is a member of the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.[1] He played college basketball at the University of Washington, and became an honorable mention all-American. Nance went on to be selected in the fourth round of the 1965 NBA draft by the St. Louis Hawks.[2] Unfortunately, a knee injury ended his professional career before he ever played a game for St. Louis.[3] During his tenure at Division II Central Missouri State, he won a national championship. He was also an assistant coach at the University of Kentucky, and Fresno State. In 2010, he returned to coaching a serve as an assistant under Trent Johnson at LSU. [4] His total 19-year-Division I and II head coaching mark is 302-224. Aside from his career as a coach, Nance also served as a special agent for the FBI, as well as working as an assistant director for the NCAA.[3] Nance drew upon his experience as an FBI agent to write a novel titled Bridger:Deadly Peril.[3] Head coaching record{{CBB Yearly Record Start | type = | conference = | postseason = | poll = }}{{CBB Yearly Record Subhead| name = Iowa State Cyclones | conference = Big Eight Conference | startyear = 1976 | endyear = 1980 }}{{CBB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | season = 1976–77 | name = Iowa State | overall = 8–19* | conference = 4–10* | confstanding = 8th* | postseason = }}{{CBB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | season = 1977–78 | name = Iowa State | overall = 14–13 | conference = 9–5 | confstanding = 2nd | postseason = }}{{CBB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | season = 1978–79 | name = Iowa State | overall = 11–16 | conference = 6–8 | confstanding = 6th | postseason = }}{{CBB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | season = 1979–80 | name = Iowa State | overall = 8–10** | conference = 2–3** | confstanding = 5th** | postseason = }}{{CBB Yearly Record Subtotal | name = Iowa State | overall = 40–59 | confrecord = 21–26 }}{{CBB Yearly Record Subhead | name = Saint Mary's Gaels | conference = West Coast Athletic Conference | startyear = 1986 | endyear = 1989 }}{{CBB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | season = 1986–87 | name = Saint Mary's | overall = 17–13 | conference = 7–7 | confstanding = 3rd | postseason = }}{{CBB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | season = 1987–88 | name = Saint Mary's | overall = 19–9 | conference = 9–5 | confstanding = 2nd | postseason = }}{{CBB Yearly Record Entry | championship = conference | season = 1988–89 | name = Saint Mary's | overall = 25–5 | conference = 12–2 | confstanding = 1st | postseason = NCAA Division I First Round }}{{CBB Yearly Record Subtotal | name = Saint Mary's | overall = 61–27 | confrecord = 28–14 }}{{CBB Yearly Record Subhead | name = Washington Huskies | conference = Pacific-10 Conference | startyear = 1989 | endyear = 1993 }}{{CBB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | season = 1989–90 | name = Washington | overall = 11–17 | conference = 5–13 | confstanding = 9th | postseason = }}{{CBB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | season = 1990–91 | name = Washington | overall = 14–14 | conference = 5–13 | confstanding = 10th | postseason = }}{{CBB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | season = 1991–92 | name = Washington | overall = 12–17 | conference = 5–13 | confstanding = 8th | postseason = }}{{CBB Yearly Record Entry | championship = | season = 1992–93 | name = Washington | overall = 13–14 | conference = 7–11 | confstanding = 8th | postseason = }}{{CBB Yearly Record Subtotal | name = Washington | overall = 50–62 | confrecord = 22–50 }}{{CBB Yearly Record End | overall = 151–148 }} (*) ISU finished the season 7–20, but was later awarded a win vacated by Oklahoma State.
