Ambika appeared in a glamorous role alongside Rajinikanth. She first comes across as a rude princess, who later falls in love with him. It is a remake of the Hindi film Mard.{{sfn|Ramachandran|2012|p=111}} The film was an average at the box office. This was the first 70 mm movie in Tamil cinema.[1] First time, 6 Track Stereo Phonic sound is used by Illayaraja for this film. Cast
SoundtrackThe music was composed by Ilaiyaraaja.[2]
ReleaseMaaveeran was released on 1 November 1986, Diwali day,[3] and faced heavy competition with Punnagai Mannan and Palaivana Rojakkal.[4] The film failed commercially because, according to Rajinikanth's biographer Naman Ramachandran, the combination of Punnagai Mannan{{'}}s director K. Balachander, lead actor Kamal Haasan, lead actress Revathi and the soundtrack by Ilaiyaraaja "proved too much for Maaveeran, and its audience was restricted to hard-core Rajinikanth fans".{{sfn|Ramachandran|2012|pp=111-112}} The Indian Express wrote on 7 November 1986, "One Manmohan Desai in Hindi is enough. Was a Tamil import of his film necessary?".[5]References1. ^{{Cite web|url=http://madrasmusings.com/Vol%2023%20No%2016/the-tamil-film-in-100-years-of-indian-cinema.html|title=Madras Musings - We care for Madras that is Chennai|website=madrasmusings.com|access-date=2018-12-17}} 2. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.raaga.com/channels/tamil/moviedetail.asp?mid=T0002781|title=Maaveeran Songs|accessdate=2013-12-24|publisher=raaga}} 3. ^{{Cite news |url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=P9oYG7HA76QC&dat=19861101&printsec=frontpage&hl=en |title=Maaveeran |date=1 November 1986 |work=The Indian Express |page=7}} 4. ^{{Cite news |url=http://www.newindianexpress.com/entertainment/tamil/2017/dec/11/rajinikanth-turns-67-more-than-moondru-mugam-1724738.html |title=Rajinikanth turns 67: More than moondru mugam |date=11 December 2017 |work=The New Indian Express |access-date=20 April 2018 |archive-url=http://archive.li/Fbyjp |archive-date=20 April 2018 |dead-url=no}} 5. ^{{Cite news|url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=P9oYG7HA76QC&dat=19861107&printsec=frontpage&hl=en|title=Rajini's Raj|last=|first=|date=7 November 1986|work=The Indian Express|access-date=|archive-url=|archive-date=|dead-url=|page=14}} Bibliography
