Magnolia West High School ("MWHS") is one of two public high schools in the Magnolia Independent School District in Montgomery County, Texas, United States.

Description

Located in Magnolia, Texas, an exurb of Houston, the school opened in August 2006 in order to relieve crowding at Magnolia High School.[2] MWHS served grades 9 and 10 in the 2007-2008 school year and grades 9 through 12 in the 2009-2010 school year.

Demographics

In the 2017-2018 school year, there were 2,032 students enrolled at Magnolia West High School. The ethnic distribution of students was as follows: 2.1% African American, 0.6% Asian, 32.3% Hispanic, 0.7% American Indian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 62.7% White, and 1.4% Two or More Races. 44.9% of students were listed as Economically Disadvantaged. 6.1% were English Language Learners.[1]

Academics

At the beginning of each school year, the Texas Education Agency assigns schools a grade based on three different indices: Student Achievement, School Progress, and Closing the Gaps. For each index, schools are classified as "Met Standard" if they receive a grade of at least 60 out of 100. In 2018, Magnolia West High School received an overall score of 83 and was classified as "Met Standard." The school received scores of 86 in Student Achievement, 81 in School Progress, and 77 in Closing the Gaps. In addition, the agency also awards schools with "Distinction Designations" if they outperform schools with similar demographics. In 2018, Magnolia West High School was awarded four out of seven possible Distinction Designations: Academic Achievement in Mathematics, Academic Achievement in Science, Academic Achievement in English Language Arts/Reading, and Top 25 Percent: Comparative Academic Growth.[3]

Athletics

MWHS offers a number of athletic programs, including football, basketball boys' and girls' soccer, baseball, volleyball, softball, track and field, cross country, swim, tennis, athletic training, cheerleading, dance, and golf. They also have a marching band. The school teams are known as the Mustangs and the school colors are maroon and gold.[4]

Clubs and activities

Magnolia West High School's clubs include anime club, creative writing club, debate, DECA, DIY Club, FCCLA, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Future Farmers of America, French club, Interact club, game club, and ping pong club.[5]
