The species was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1888, who named it after its collector, Richard Baron. It is endemic to Madagascar.[2] Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest, subtropical or tropical moist montane forest, rivers, and degraded former forest. Although it has been classified as Least Concern species by the IUCN due to its relatively wide distribution, it is threatened by habitat loss.
