Given its secluded location, the street has been described as "the hidden wonder of the West End"[1] and it was voted best street in London by listeners of BBC Radio 4, winning praise for its being "a haven in the middle of the frantic city".[2] Marylebone High Street is also a ward of the City of Westminster. The population of this ward at the 2011 Census was 10,366.[3] HistorySoon after the construction St Marylebone Parish Church on the north end of the street in approximately 1400, Marylebone High Street became the focus of the village of Marylebone, a role it has continued ever since.[4] 1738 saw the official opening of Marylebone Gardens on the east side of the street, a stylish concert venue which attracted eminent composers such as George Frideric Handel and James Hook; the entrance to the Gardens was through the "Rose Tavern", a public house on 35-36 Marylebone High Street, which until September 2009 was the home of BBC London which has since moved to BBC Broadcasting House. The majority of the buildings in the street today date from 1900, since which point the street has been consistently revitalised by the main local landlord, Howard de Walden Estates, which has been credited with turning a "once-shabby area of central London" into an elegant street which carefully manages its "mix of boutiques and small retailers".[5] Property prices in the area have soared in recent years.[6] References{{coord|51|31|11|N|0|09|06|W|type:landmark_region:GB|display=title}}1. ^Marylebone High Street {{webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080705192216/http://www.mywestend.co.uk/westend/shops-xmasmarylebone-high-street.htm |date=5 July 2008 }} 2. ^{{cite news |title=Britons name 'best and worst streets' |url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/2270840.stm |accessdate=24 May 2015 |work=BBC News |date=20 September 2002}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.neighbourhood.statistics.gov.uk/dissemination/LeadKeyFigures.do?a=7&b=13689148&c=Marylebone+High+Street&d=14&e=62&g=6340403&i=1001x1003x1032x1004&o=362&m=0&r=1&s=1476611902969&enc=1|title=City of Westminster ward population 2011|accessdate=16 October 2016|publisher=Office for National Statistics |work=Neighbourhood Statistics}} 4. ^Marylebone High Street - The Howard de Walden Estate 5. ^Fashioning London's chic streets - International Herald Tribune 6. ^{{cite web |url=https://www.telegraph.co.uk/money/main.jhtml?xml=/money/2007/08/05/ccshaft105.xml |title=Lane is streets ahead |work=The Daily Telegraph |location=London}} External links{{commons category inline|Marylebone High Street}}{{London-stub}} 3 : Shopping streets in London|Streets in the City of Westminster|Howard de Walden Estate |
