In 1857, he first became a county judge (which he served until 1862) and then a probate judge.[3] At the same time, in 1857, he served as a member of the California State Assembly until 1858.[3] In 1881, he became the Mayor of San Francisco and served for only two years.[4] Just one year after leaving office, he became a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1884. Blake died of a heart attack in San Francisco on September 26, 1897. He is interred at Mount Tamalpais Cemetery in San Rafael, California. His nephew's daughter, Anna Blake Mezquida, became a writer and journalist in San Francisco.[5] References1. ^{{cite web|last=Kestenbaum|first=Lawrence|title=Index to Politicians: Blaise to Blake|url=http://politicalgraveyard.com/bio/blais-blake.html|work=PoliticalGraveyard.com|accessdate=November 16, 2011}} {{SFMayors}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Blake, Maurice Carey}}{{California-mayor-stub}}2. ^{{cite web|title=Mayor of San Francisco|url=http://www.nndb.com/gov/867/000047726/|work=NDDB|publisher=Soylent Communications|accessdate=November 16, 2011}} 3. ^1 2 3 {{cite book | last = Shuck |first = Oscar T. |title = History of the Bench and Bar of California | publisher = The Commercial Printing House | year = 1901 | url = https://archive.org/details/benchandbarofcal00shuc | format = PDF |page = 551 |ISBN= 978-1584777069}} 4. ^{{cite book | last = Shuck |first = Oscar T. |title = History of the Bench and Bar of California | publisher = The Commercial Printing House | year = 1901 | url = https://archive.org/details/benchandbarofcal00shuc | format = PDF |page = 552 |ISBN= 978-1584777069}} 5. ^Guide to the Anna Blake Mezquida Papers, 1788-1975 (bulk 1898-1965), Bancroft Library, Berkeley CA. 5 : 1815 births|1897 deaths|Mayors of San Francisco|California Republicans|19th-century American politicians |
