The specific epithet {{lang|la|subunifoliolata}} is from the Latin meaning "nearly one leaf", referring to the almost unifoliolate leaves.[4]DescriptionMelicope subunifoliolata grows up as a shrub or tree up to {{convert|15|m|-1}} tall. The branchlets are hairy to velvety when young. The inflorescences are hairy to velvety and measure up to {{convert|13|cm|in|0|abbr=on}} long. The ellipsoid fruits measure up to {{convert|1|cm|in|1|abbr=on}} long.[4]Distribution and habitatMelicope subunifoliolata is endemic to Borneo where it is confined to Sabah.
