This enzyme belongs to the family of lyases, specifically the carboxy-lyases, which cleave carbon-carbon bonds. The systematic name of this enzyme class is (S)-methylmalonyl-CoA carboxy-lyase (propanoyl-CoA-forming). Other names in common use include propionyl-CoA carboxylase, propionyl coenzyme A carboxylase, methylmalonyl-coenzyme A decarboxylase, (S)-2-methyl-3-oxopropanoyl-CoA carboxy-lyase [incorrect], and (S)-methylmalonyl-CoA carboxy-lyase. This enzyme participates in propanoate metabolism. Structural studiesAs of late 2007, two structures have been solved for this class of enzymes, with PDB accession codes {{PDB link|1EF8}} and {{PDB link|1EF9}}. References
