Miles Macdonell Collegiate is a high school in Winnipeg, Manitoba that opened in September 1952 and is part of the River East Transcona School Division. It is one of the six schools in Manitoba that participate in the International Baccalaureate Program. The school offers classes in French Immersion geared towards university attendance in either official language. Miles Macdonell also offers several vocational tracks of study, including Cosmetology (hairstyling and nail care). Students may also complete a dual diploma, earning both an academic high school diploma and technical/vocational certification.

The school is named after Miles Macdonell who as the first governor of the Red River Settlement led the Red River Settlers in 1812 and reported directly to Lord Selkirk, founder of the settlement. He is commemorated with a plaque that can be found just inside the front doors on Roch Avenue.

Music Program

The school has one of the best music programs in the city, as well as one of the best junior recording studios in all of Canada. Several albums have been produced in the school, mainly consisting of the school's choir program and their highly prestigious vocal group called "Prodigy", consisting of a small number of very talented singers. Prodigy has performed in various countries, including Scotland, Austria, Mexico, and the United States. When Queen Elizabeth II came to Winnipeg in 2003, Prodigy was asked to perform for her, as well as performing at the International Peace Gardens for the 5th anniversary of 9/11.

Festival Théâtre Jeunesse

On May 8, 2008, a group of students from the French Immersion program participated in the annual Festival Théâtre Jeunesse at the Centre Culturel Franco-Manitobain (Franco-Manitoban Cultural Centre). The group performed a piece titled "Le long voyage " (The Long Voyage), which won the top prize in the General Production category.

The Tunnel

Miles MacDonell was originally two separate schools and therefore occupies two main buildings. The north wing was originally Melrose Junior High which existed from 1954 to 1962. These buildings are linked by a hallway which, although it is above ground, is referred to as "The Tunnel" built in 1970 replacing a smaller 10 foot wide tunnel built in 1964. The Tunnel not only connects the two buildings, but is also home to the library, the arts room and the theatre.

The original part of school the present science wing was built in 1952, followed by a 1955 addition, the south wing second floor, a 1960 addition which added a gym and the school east of the tunnel. The former Melrose Junior High building became part of the school in 1962 and the current theatre, library and tunnel were added in 1970. In the 2010-2011 school year, two elevators were added to allow wheelchair access to the north and middle section second floors.

  • To advise the collegiate on matters of interest of the alumni
  • To facilitate fundraising among the alumni to promote projects to benefit the collegiate

This high school Alumni Association has accomplished what few others have within the city, and that is… to remain active after a major event such as an anniversary celebration. This association has been active for 22 years. That started in 1997 with the organizing work for the 50th Anniversary Reunion held in 2002 and has continued with the incorporation as the “Miles Macdonell Collegiate Alumni Association” on February 28, 2003.

Ever since, Board members have been meeting regularly with the collegiate Administration to discuss any needs they may have, and how the MMCAA can best assist. It strives to be proactive toward their present and future requirements.

Just prior to its incorporation, in 2002, the group of alumni involved with the MMC 50th Anniversary created a trust fund which is managed by Winnipeg Foundation ( www.wpgfdn.org ). In all, as of February, 2019, the MMCAA has overseen the dispersal directly to the collegiate and its students of more than $88,000!!

Some details of those contributions and its own activities are as follows:

  • $70,500 since 2004 in the form of annual scholarships for post-secondary education awarded to 52 students
  • $5000 in 2002 to the Music Department
  • $2838 for pizza luncheons for the EAL students (an activity now discontinued)
  • $2500 towards the cost of painting a mural on a wall in Gym A in 2013
  • $2500 for a new sports display case
  • $1150 for the original MMC Alumni website (now terminated)
  • $1000 to the music program to be used towards costs associated with developing a Prodigy website in 2013
  • $950 in awards to outstanding students in the Multi-Media Department
  • $500 Mental Health Awareness Program Funding in 2017
  • $500 for benches along the wall for the EAL students
  • $500 towards start-up costs for the Miles Mac literary magazine
  • $481 for two binders for the collegiate archives of historical data on the collegiate
  • Organized events to mark the school's 60th Anniversary in 2012
  • Digitized the MMC yearbooks from 1952/53 – 2016/17 (all of which are offered for sale)
  • Organized a database of alumni contact information for specific alumni based events

They are always looking for volunteers and people willing to pitch in with their regular activities and future milestone reunion events!
