William Shatner hosted the event for the only time, and color commentary was provided by Tommy Davidson, Vanessa Minnillo, Miss Teen USA 1998 and Lara Dutta, the reigning Miss Universe. Entertainment was provided by Lara Fabian, Evan and Jaron and The Warren Brothers.

Historical significance

  • This became the first win for Texas in six years, when Chelsi Smith was crowned Miss USA 1995 then went on later to win Miss Universe 1995.
  • This is also Texas's eighth win at Miss USA, which continues to be the pageant record.
  • This is the highest finish of a delegate from the District of Columbia since Bobbie Johnson won Miss USA 1964.
  • Georgia had its highest placement since 1993.
  • Michigan had its fourth straight Top 10 placement.
  • This became only the second time in seven years that a Miss Teen USA state delegate did not win or inherit the Miss USA title.
  • Massachusetts was represented by an African-American—the second time in the pageant's history.(The first was in 1979).
