It was released on 1 October 2007. The track was described by Nash as a protest song.{{cn|date=May 2017}} Critical and commercial receptionThe song failed to match the success of Nash's previous single "Foundations" both commercially and critically. It managed to peak just outside the top twenty of the UK Singles Chart upon its physical release.[1][2][3] Slant Magazine felt the song failed to live up to "Foundations",[4] while The Guardian felt overall the song was "unnecessary".[5] Track listingsAll songs written by Kate Nash. {{tracklist| headline = UK CD | total_length = | title1 = Mouthwash | writer1 = Nash | length1 = 5:02 | title2 = Stitching Leggings | writer2 = Nash | length2 = 2:17 }}{{tracklist | headline = UK Vinyl 1 | total_length = | title1 = Mouthwash | writer1 = Nash | length1 = 5:02 | title2 = Dirt (Demo from Iceland) | writer2 = Nash | length2 = 6:06 }}{{tracklist | headline = UK Vinyl 2 | total_length = | title1 = Mouthwash | writer1 = Nash | length1 = 5:02 | title2 = Take 'Em Back | note2 = misprinted as "Take 'Em Out" on the cover | writer2 = Nash | length2 = 2:19 }}{{tracklist | headline = Digital Download | total_length = | title1 = Mouthwash | note1 = Hot Chip Remix | writer1 = Nash | length1 = 5:26 }} Music videoThe music video for "Mouthwash" was shot at the Bristol Hippodrome with the cast of the Starlight Express, who learned two new routines for the video.
