In the Records of the Grand Historian he was listed by Sima Qian as the seventeenth Shang king, succeeding his cousin Zu Ding. He was enthroned in the year of Bingchen ({{lang|zh|丙辰}}) with Bi ({{lang|zh|庇}}) as his capital. In the third year of his reign he moved his capital to Yan ({{lang|zh|奄}}). He ruled for about 29 years before his death. He was given the posthumous name Nan Geng and was succeeded by his cousin's son Yang Jia.[1][2][3] Oracle script inscriptions on bones unearthed at Yinxu alternatively record that he was the sixteenth Shang king.[2][3]References1. ^{{cite book |last=Bai |first=Shouyi |authorlink= |coauthors= |title=An Outline History of China |year=2002 |publisher=Foreign Language Press |location=Beijing |isbn=7-119-02347-0}} {{s-start}}{{s-hou|Shang dynasty||||}}{{s-reg}}{{s-bef|before=Zu Ding}}{{s-ttl||title=King of China|years=}}{{s-aft|after=Xiang Jia}}{{end}}{{Kings of Shang}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Nan Geng}}2. ^1 {{cite web |url =http://chinaknowledge.de/History/Myth/shang-rulers.html |title = The Shang Dynasty Rulers |accessdate = August 7, 2007 |author = |last = |first = |authorlink = |coauthors = |date = |work = |publisher = China Knowledge |pages = |doi = |archiveurl = |archivedate = |quote = }} 3. ^1 {{cite web|url=http://www.indiana.edu/~g380/Kings.pdf |title=Shang Kingship And Shang Kinship |accessdate=August 7, 2007 |author= |last= |first= |authorlink= |coauthors= |date= |format= |work= |publisher=Indiana University |pages= |doi= |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20080409215121/http://www.indiana.edu/~g380/Kings.pdf |archivedate=April 9, 2008 |quote= |deadurl=yes }} 1 : Shang dynasty kings |
