Naugachia is a town and a notified area in Bhagalpur district in the Indian state of Bihar. It is a block and a division of the Bhagalpur district and also a police district.

Geography

Naugachia is located at 25°24′N 87°06′E . It has an average elevation of 25 metres (82 feet). It is bordered on one side by the river Ganges and one by the river Koshi. It is famous for yellow maize. It is also known as Kelanchal of Bihar (producer of bananas). Due to construction of the Ring dam, flood is no longer a problem for Naugachia. Naugachia is the heart of Bhagalpur, because Vikaramshila Bridge starts from Naugachia on Ganga River.

Demographics

{{As of|2011}} India census,[1] Naugachia had a population of 3,02,475. Males constitute 55% of the population and females 45%. Naugachia has an[2] average literacy rate of 62%, lower than the national average of 74%: male literacy is 69%, and female literacy is 55%. In Naugachia, 18% of the population is under 9 years of age.

Administration

Naugachia Nagar Panchayat is the governing body in the town popularly known as NAC (Notified Area Committee).

Transport

The Naugachia railway station, on the Barauni-Katihar section, is managed by the East Central Railway. The railway station code is NNA.[3] The nearest airport is the Purnia. Naugachia lies close the banks of Ganges river in South and Kosi river on North. Vikramshila Setu, the second longest bridge across the Ganges, connects Naugachia with Barari Ghat in Bhagalpur.National Highway-31 is also nearby.[4]

Places of interest

The village Jhandapur is located in between main railway track (only 1 km away from the historic thana Bihpur railway station) and N.H.31, which touches the village from its north. The landlords, Kumar family, from this village had supposedly freed the region from Dacoits long back and so the village is known by its present name. This is one of the most populous villages in the region having two gram panchayats, Jhandapur East and Jhandapur west. The village also cater its nearby villages by its daily haat and market. It has also a bank, ADB SBI, that caters to banking requirements of it vicinity. Apart from this, the villages has two middle schools, one of them is dedicated to girl education. The crop pattern of this village is diverse most; cultivating banana, maize, lytchee, mango, sugarcane, etc. Similarly, the village has got the most diverse social demography in terms of religion and caste. the village along with its twin village Auliabad has three famous Kali temples, history of one of them can be linked to Dakshisneshwar Kali of Kolakata, and a number of hanuman temples including one located nearby N.H.31, Bisahri sthan and Kabutra sthan, etc.

- Simra & sripur is one of the best villages in Naugachia. 1.5 km away from railway station, Simra has their own middle school, primary school, well-built roads and many temples like kali mandir, shiv mandir, Brahma sthan and a big tree of people which describe the incredibility of Simra east.

(This place is about 8.0 kilometres far from Naugachia Railway Station and has good connectivity of roads. This is very famous for the endangered species of the giant "Garuda / गरुड़" bird which is only found in its nearby regions; Baba Vishuraut Kosi River Bridge is also a popular spot for the local people.)
