At the 2016 Australian census it had a population of approximately 10,000.[1] Initially a coal mining township, New Lambton later became a municipality until it was eventually incorporated into Greater Newcastle. The suburb, which is primarily residential, includes a {{convert|182|ha|acre|abbr=on|adj=on}} nature reserve and a major regional sports centre. GeographyThe suburb is irregularly shaped, covering an area of approximately {{convert|5.5|km2|sqmi|1|abbr=on}}.[2] While mainly residential in nature, the entire south-western part of the suburb is occupied by Blackbutt Reserve, a {{convert|182|ha|acre|abbr=on|adj=on}} nature reserve consisting primarily of natural bushland.[11] The east of the suburb is predominantly level and only a few metres above sea level, but rises to approximately {{convert|90|m|ft|abbr=on}} above mean sea level in the western areas, the highest parts of the suburb being in Blackbutt Reserve.[2] HistoryEarly yearsNew Lambton was originally a coal mining township, with the New Lambton Colliery situated to the east across the railway in what is now Adamstown.[12] On 8 January 1889 New Lambton was incorporated as a Municipality covering {{convert|2560|acre|km2|0|abbr=on}}.{{citation needed|date=March 2012}} 1901In 1901 New Lambton had a population of 1,464. The Municipal Council consisted of the following:
The council derived a considerable revenue from the district's largest mine, the Scottish-Australian Coal Mining Company's Lambton Colliery, managed by the three Croudace brothers, Frank, Thomas, & Sydney, which although closer to Lambton fell within the New Lambton municipality.{{citation needed|date=March 2012}} One of the district's principal thoroughfares today is Croudace Street. The town was free of debt, and had a telegraph office, Council Chambers (erected at a cost of £550), the New Lambton Mechanics Institute, a reading room, fire brigade, public school, good streets and "many signs of advancement". The Member for Kahibah in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly, including New Lambton, was Alfred Edden.[13] Later yearsIn 1938 an Act of the New South Wales Parliament created the "City of Greater Newcastle", which incorporated eleven municipalities, including New Lambton, into one local government area.{{citation needed|date=March 2012}} During World War II, New Lambton Public School was requisitioned by the government and used as No. 2 Fighter Sector Headquarters. In recognition of this, the school was granted permission in 1995 to fly the Royal Australian Air Force Ensign and is the only school in Australia allowed to do so.[14] New Lambton once boasted an art-deco cinema, The Savoy, now the New Lambton Community Centre.[15] TransportNew Lambton is bordered by, or crossed by various arterial roads. Lookout Road, which joins Croudace Road, borders the suburb to the west. To the east, Lambton Road facilitates access to the Newcastle CBD. To the south, Carnley Avenue and Northcott Drive provide access to the City of Lake Macquarie suburbs. The south-east of the suburb is bordered by the Main Northern Railway, where the suburb is serviced by Adamstown railway station. Blackbutt ReserveThe entire south-western corner of the suburb is occupied by Blackbutt Reserve. The main entrances of the reserve, in Carnley Avenue and Freyberg Street, are approximately {{convert|8.8|km|mi|1|abbr=on}} by road from the Newcastle CBD.[2][16] Covering {{convert|182|ha|acre|0}}, the reserve is mainly urban bushland, and includes nature trails, wildlife exhibits, children’s playgrounds and recreational facilities. The reserve, which is administered by the Newcastle City Council, has over {{convert|16|km|mi|0|abbr=on}} of tracks meandering through open rainforest.[11] There are four main picnic and recreational areas in the reserve, off different entry points:
SportNew Lambton includes several parks where various sports are played. At the north-eastern corner of the suburb, is the Newcastle International Sports Centre, a venue used by the National Rugby League's Newcastle Knights and the A-League's Newcastle Jets. The suburb is also home to the New Lambton Football Club, whose home ground is Novocastrian Park and Western Suburbs Cricket Club, who call Harker Oval home.{{citation needed|date=May 2013}} References1. ^1 {{Census 2016 AUS|id=SSC12942 |name=New Lambton (State Suburb) |accessdate=9 February 2018 |quick=on}} 2. ^1 2 3 1:100000 map 9232 NEWCASTLE. 3. ^1 2 {{cite web|url=http://www.dlg.nsw.gov.au/dlg/dlghome/dlg_Regions.asp?regiontype=2&slacode=5900®ion=HT|title=Suburb Search – Local Council Boundaries – Hunter (HT) – Newcastle|publisher=New South Wales Division of Local Government|accessdate=24 March 2012|deadurl=yes|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20110326212751/http://www.dlg.nsw.gov.au/dlg/dlghome/dlg_Regions.asp?regiontype=2&slacode=5900®ion=HT|archivedate=26 March 2011|df=dmy-all}} 4. ^1 {{NSW GNR|id=ujqwlMKmJP|title=New Lambton|accessdate=24 March 2012}} 5. ^{{cite web | title = Wallsend| publisher = New South Wales Electoral Commission | url = http://www.elections.nsw.gov.au/districts/profiles/2015/Wallsend| date=28 March 2015 |accessdate = 13 April 2015 }} 6. ^{{cite web | title = Charlestown| publisher = New South Wales Electoral Commission | url = http://www.elections.nsw.gov.au/districts/profiles/2015/Charlestown | date=28 March 2015 |accessdate = 13 April 2015 }} 7. ^{{cite web | title = Newcastle| publisher = New South Wales Electoral Commission | url = http://www.elections.nsw.gov.au/districts/profiles/2015/Newcastle| date=28 March 2015 |accessdate = 13 April 2015 }} 8. ^{{Cite web|url=http://apps.aec.gov.au/esearch/LocalitySearchResults.aspx?filter=Newcastle&filterby=Electorate|title=Newcastle|publisher=Australian Electoral Commission|date=23 February 2011|accessdate=24 March 2012|deadurl=yes|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20110521211351/http://apps.aec.gov.au/esearch/LocalitySearchResults.aspx?filter=Newcastle&filterby=Electorate|archivedate=21 May 2011|df=dmy-all}} 9. ^1 2 {{BoM Aust stats|site_ref=cw_061055|site_name=Newcastle Nobbys Signal Station AWS|accessdate=24 March 2012}} 10. ^{{DoL suburb image|name=New Lambton|codename=New%20Lambton|accessdate=24 March 2012}} 11. ^1 {{cite web|url=http://www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au/recreation/blackbutt_reserve|title=Blackbutt Reserve|publisher=Newcastle City Council|accessdate=24 March 2012}} 12. ^1 {{cite web|url=http://www.newlambton-p.schools.nsw.edu.au/webcomp%202005/New%20Lambton%20Collieries.htm|title=New Lambton Collieries|publisher=New Lambton Public School|accessdate=24 March 2012}} 13. ^{{cite book|title=The Federal Directory of Newcastle and District for 1901|origyear=1901|year=1982|publisher=Davies & Cannington|location=Newcastle|isbn=0-9593518-0-9}} 14. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.newlambton.ps.education.nsw.gov.au/war_years.html|title=The War Years|publisher=New Lambton Public School|accessdate=24 March 2012|deadurl=yes|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20120320095825/http://www.newlambton.ps.education.nsw.gov.au/war_years.html|archivedate=20 March 2012|df=dmy-all}} 15. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au/about_newcastle/news_and_events/image_galleries/art_deco|title=New Lambton Community Centre|accessdate=24 March 2012|deadurl=yes|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20120322132844/http://www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au/about_newcastle/news_and_events/image_galleries/art_deco|archivedate=22 March 2012|df=dmy-all}} 16. ^{{cite web|url=https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ll=-32.932912,151.696644&spn=0.017253,0.05579&t=m&z=15&vpsrc=6|title=Google Map|accessdate=24 March 2012}} External links{{commons category}}
