It is located in the northeast of the republic and borders with Allaikhovsky District in the west, Srednekolymsky District in the south, and with Bilibinsky District of Chukotka Autonomous Okrug in the east. The area of the district is {{convert|87100|km2|sp=us}}.[4] Its administrative center is the urban locality (a settlement) of Chersky.[4] Population: {{ru-census2010|4,664|;}} 5,932 (2002 Census);[5] {{su-census1989|13,692|.}} The population of Chersky accounts for 61.3% of the district's total population. GeographyThe district is washed by the East Siberian Sea in the north. The main river in the district is the Kolyma. Other rivers include the Alazeya and the Chukochya. There are many lakes in the district, among them Lake Nerpichye, Lake Chukochye, Lake Bolshoye Morshoye, and Lake Ilyrgyttyn. ClimateAverage January temperature ranges from {{convert|-32|C}} in the north to {{convert|-38|C}} in the south and average July temperature ranges from {{convert|+4|C}} in the north to {{convert|+12|C}} in the south.[6] Annual precipitation is {{convert|150|-|200|mm|sp=us}}.[6] HistoryThe district was established on May 20, 1931.[6] DemographicsAs of the 1989 Census, the ethnic composition was as follows:[6]
