The NIFRS is overseen by the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service Board, which in turn is subordinate to the Department of Health. NIFRS has a workforce of around 2,230 personnel.[1] NIFRS serves the entire population of Northern Ireland, an area of over {{convert|5500|sqmi|km2}} with a population of 1.71 million people.
