It includes both odontogenic hard and soft tissues[1]. The average age of people found with an odontoma is 14.[6] The condition is frequently associated with one or more unerupted teeth and is often detected through failure of teeth to erupt at the expected time. Though most cases are found impacted within the jaw there are instances where odontomas have erupted into the oral cavity.[7] ClassificationThere are two main types: compound and complex.[8]
In addition to the above forms, the dilated odontoma is an infrequent developmental alteration that appears in any area of the dental arches and can affect deciduous, permanent and supernumerary teeth. Dens invaginatus is a developmental anomaly resulting from invagination of a portion of crown forming within the enamel organ during odontogenesis. The most extreme form of dens invaginatus is known as dilated odontoma. Associated pathologyIn the 4th edition of the World Health Organization (WHO) Classification of Head and Neck Tumors (published in January 2017), there is a new section added on odontomas that speculates on a relationship between developing odontomas and ameloblastic fibromas/ameloblastic fibrodentinoma and ameloblastic fibro-odontoma[1]. EpidemiologyOdontomas are thought to be the second most frequent type of odontogenic tumor worldwide (after ameloblastoma), accounting for about 20% of all cases within this relatively uncommon tumor category which shows large geographic variations in incidence.[9] References1. ^1 2 {{Cite book|url=http://publications.iarc.fr/Book-And-Report-Series/Who-Iarc-Classification-Of-Tumours/Who-Classification-Of-Head-And-Neck-Tumours-2017|title=WHO Classification of Head and Neck Tumours|last=AK|first=El-Naggar|last2=JKC|first2=Chan|last3=JR|first3=Grandis|last4=T|first4=Takata|last5=PJ|first5=Slootweg|isbn=9789283224389|language=en}} 2. ^{{cite book|author=Ireland R|title=A Dictionary of Dentistry|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=XWCcAQAAQBAJ&pg=PA247|date=25 March 2010|publisher=Oxford University Press|isbn=978-0-19-953301-5|page=247}} 3. ^{{cite book|author=Fletcher CDM|title=Diagnostic Histopathology of Tumors: Expert Consult - Online|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=iXSYYWVMZRkC&pg=PT791|date=2 April 2013|publisher=Elsevier Health Sciences|isbn=1-4557-3754-2|page=791}} 4. ^{{cite journal |vauthors=Junquera L, de Vicente JC, Roig P, Olay S, Rodríguez-Recio O |title=Intraosseous odontoma erupted into the oral cavity: an unusual pathology |journal=Med Oral Patol Oral Cir Bucal |volume=10 |issue=3 |pages=248–51 |year=2005 |pmid=15876969 |doi= |url=http://www.medicinaoral.com/medoralfree01/v10i3/medoralv10i3p248.pdf}} 5. ^{{cite book|title=Odontoma | encyclopedia= Dorland's Illustrated Medical Dictionary |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=nHKj1FyrSW4C&pg=PA1313|year=2011|publisher=Elsevier Health Sciences |isbn=1-4160-6257-2 |page=1313}} 6. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.dental.washington.edu/case_of_month/dec08/tumors.html |title=Odontogenic tumors |work= |accessdate=2009-01-04 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20110720111746/http://www.dental.washington.edu/case_of_month/dec08/tumors.html |archivedate=2011-07-20 |df= }} 7. ^{{cite journal |vauthors=Bhargavan Sarojini S, Khosla E, Varghese T, Johnson Arakkal L |title=Eruption of odontomas into the oral cavity: a report of 2 cases |journal=Case Rep Dent |volume=2014 |pages= 4 pages |year=2014 |pmid=24900927 |doi=10.1155/2014/639173 |url=http://www.hindawi.com/journals/crid/2014/639173 |pmc=4037568}} 8. ^{{cite journal |vauthors=Amado Cuesta S, Gargallo Albiol J, Berini Aytés L, Gay Escoda C |title=Review of 61 cases of odontoma.
