The western terminus of SR 243 is at a diamond interchange with the U.S. Route 52 (US 52) in Coal Grove. The eastern terminus of the state highway is at its signalized junction with State Route 7 approximately {{convert|1.25|mi|km}} west of Proctorville near the northern banks of the Ohio River. SR 243 used to continue east from here, running concurrently with SR 7 into Proctorville, then split briefly from SR 7 as it passed through the community of Rome before ending at SR 7 about {{convert|3|mi|km}} east of Proctorville. HistorySR 243 between SR 7, in Proctorville, and SR 7 northeast of Proctorville, was signed in 1923 as SR 219.[2][3] In 1925, SR 219 was replaced by SR 243.[4][5] This section of road was paved in 1929.[6][7] The western terminus was moved west to Coalgrove, concurrent with SR 7 through Proctorville, in 1932.[8][9] The paving of the route between Coalgrove and Proctorville was completed by 1955.[10][11] On December 11, 2006, SR 243 was truncated to its present location following completion of the new SR 775 by-pass of Proctorville, which SR 7 was re-routed onto, leaving jurisdiction of the former routings of SSR 7 and SR 243 through Proctorville to be turned over from the state to the local jurisdictions.[12] Major intersections{{OHinttop|length_ref=[1]|county=Lawrence}}{{OHint|location=Coal Grove |mile=0.00 |road={{jct|state=OH|US|52|city1=Chesapeake|city2=Portsmouth|US-Bus|52|dir2=West|dab2=Ironton|city3=Ironton}} |notes=Interchange; eastern terminus of US 52 Bus. }}{{OHint |ctdab=Lawrence |location=Union Township |lspan=2 |mile=11.59 |road={{jct|state=OH|OH|378|dir1=North}} |notes=Southern terminus of SR 378 }}{{OHint |mile=18.39 |road={{jct|state=OH|OH|7}} }}{{Jctbtm}} References{{Attached KML|display=title,inline}}1. ^1 {{cite web |url=http://www.dot.state.oh.us/Divisions/Planning/TechServ/TIM/Documents/SLD/pdf_files/lawsr0243r.pdf |title=Technical Services Straight Line Diagrams |author=Ohio Department of Transportation |accessdate=December 16, 2013}} 2. ^{{Ohio road map|year=1922|accessdate=September 13, 2013}} 3. ^{{Ohio road map|year=1923|accessdate=September 13, 2013}} 4. ^1 {{Ohio road map|year=1924|accessdate=September 13, 2013}} 5. ^1 {{Ohio road map|year=1925|accessdate=September 13, 2013}} 6. ^{{Ohio road map|year=1928|accessdate=September 13, 2013}} 7. ^{{Ohio road map|year=1929|accessdate=September 13, 2013}} 8. ^{{Ohio road map|year=1931|accessdate=September 13, 2013}} 9. ^{{Ohio road map|year=1932|accessdate=September 13, 2013}} 10. ^{{Ohio road map|year=1953|accessdate=September 13, 2013}} 11. ^{{Ohio road map|year=1955|accessdate=September 13, 2013}} 12. ^{{cite web|url=http://dot.state.oh.us/techservsite/availpro/Road_%20Infor/SLD/updates_2007/LAW.htm|archive-url=https://archive.is/20070429183219/http://dot.state.oh.us/techservsite/availpro/Road_%20Infor/SLD/updates_2007/LAW.htm|dead-url=yes|archive-date=April 29, 2007|title=Straight Line Diagrams 1/2007 Updates|publisher=Ohio Department of Transportation|accessdate=September 13, 2013}} 2 : State highways in Ohio|Transportation in Lawrence County, Ohio |
