It features the Tim & Bob produced "Missing You", which was his only number one hit to date. The album was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).{{Certification Cite Ref|region=United States|type=album|award=Gold|artist=Case|title=Open Letter}} This is Case's last album on Def Jam Recordings. "Missing You" earned Case a nomination for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance at the 44th Grammy Awards in 2002. Critical reception{{Album ratings| rev1 = AllMusic | rev1Score = {{Rating|1.5|5}}[1] | rev2 = Blender | rev2Score = {{Rating|2|5}}[2] | rev3 = Vibe | rev3Score = {{Rating|3.5|5}}[3] }}Vibe contributor David Thigpen gave note of the "earthier, more robust brand of R&B" that Case performs throughout the record, saying his songwriting resembles the "strong melodies and complex, rich arrangements" of R. Kelly and found tracks like "Love of My Life" and "Shine" containing influences of "late '70s Stevie Wonder-style soul." He concluded that, "Case is no dusty retro-soulstar, though. Draped in old-school rhythms, his earnestly romantic messages still sound fresh."[3] Neil Drumming of Blender said that Case lacked conviction in delivering sexual lyrics but that the overall vibe of the songs help mask it, concluding that "Fortunately, the romance here outweighs the horizontal hula roughly five to one. So there is a place for Case — just not in the bedroom."[2] Jon Azpiri of AllMusic criticized the album for containing generic R&B compositions and Case for lacking emotion in his performance, concluding that "For his third album, Case fails to create even one original moment; perhaps this Open Letter should have never been written."[1] Track listing[4]{{Tracklist| title1 = Missing You | writer1 = Tim Kelley, Bob Robinson, Joe Thomas | length1 = 4:45 | title2 = Shine | writer2 = Case Woodard, David Guppy | length2 = 4:33 | title3 = A Song for Skye | writer3 = Woodard, Ray Watkins | length3 = 6:13 | title4 = Not Your Friend | writer4 = Woodard, Kelley, Robinson | length4 = 4:34 | title5 = Driving | writer5 = Eric Roberson, Watkins | length5 = 4:35 | title6 = Sex Games | writer6 = Woodard, Kelley, Robinson | length6 = 4:34 | title7 = Conversate | writer7 = Woodard, Kelley, Robinson | length7 = 4:28 | title8 = Love of My Life | writer8 = Woodard, Guppy, Roberson | length8 = 4:18 | title9 = Wishful Thinking | writer9 = Woodard, Guppy, Roberson | length9 = 3:33 | title10 = Crooked Letter | writer10 = Tonee MccClinton, Karylton Clanton | length10 = 3:36 | title11 = Already Have | writer11 = Woodard, Shep Crawford, Eritza Laues | length11 = 4:45 | title12 = No Regrets | writer12 = James Harris III, Terry Lewis, Woodard | length12 = 5:31 | title13 = Even Though | writer13 = Woodard, Kelley, Robinson | length13 = 4:27 }} Personnel[5]
