Our Lady of the Good Event is the English translation of the Spanish-language Catholic Marian title Nuestra Señora del Buen Suceso, often mistranslated as Our Lady of Good Success due to the superficial similarity between the Spanish word "suceso" (meaning "event") and the English false friend "success." Devotion to Our Lady under this title is primarily found in Spain and its former colonies. Pope Paul V made early use of a similar title when, in 1607, he entrusted a Marian image entitled Virgen del Buen Suceso to the Obregonian Brothers, an image which was subsequently copied throughout Spain.[1] Properly speaking, the phrase "Good Event" refers to the Purification of Mary and the Presentation of Jesus.[2] In the context of the Marian apparitions in Ecuador, the "Good Event" can also refer to the prophesied spiritual restoration of the Catholic Church to take place sometime after the 20th century. The messages prophesy that the current period of catastrophe will be followed by a period of restoration. Mother Mariana died on 16 January 1635,[3] shortly after the last alleged apparition. When her tomb was reopened in 1906, her body was found to be incorrupt.
