Ouro Branco is a Brazilian municipality located in the state of Minas Gerais. The city belongs to the Mesoregion Metropolitana de Belo Horizonte and to the Microregion of Conselheiro Lafaiete. The city has a population of 38,249 inhabitants.

The name "Ouro Branco" means "White Gold", as opposed to "Black Gold" - Ouro Preto. The city was an important base on the transportation route from the mines of Minas Gerais to the coast.[1][2]

History

Attracted by the existence of gold, at the end of the 17th century, former members of the Borba Gato flag broke the region of the present Ouro Branco. The bandeirante Miguel Garcia, there met gold that had a whitish color, being thus known like "white gold".

On February 16, 1724, during the government of Dom Lourenço de Almeida, the camp was elevated to the rank of collegiate parish, being considered one of the oldest settlements in Minas Gerais. The construction of the Igreja Matriz de Santo Antônio de Ouro Branco dates from 1717 and was probably completed in 1779. The difference of 62 years is justifiable, since the works in churches of some importance in colonial times lasted years.

Ouro Branco was a district of Ouro Preto, becoming a municipality in 1953. The city still holds historical assets such as the chapel Nossa Senhora Mãe dos Homens and the Church of Santo Antonio de Itatiaia are also from the eighteenth century. In Ouro Branco, there is also the House of Tiradentes, which is located on the right bank of the Estrada Real.

There were several economic cycles in Ouro Branco, which began with the gold cycle, later the cycle of the grape, later the cycle of the potato, and today, the predominant activity is the industrial one, that began with the installation of the then company state Aço Minas Gerais SA, in 1976, the current Gerdau Açominas SA , which inaugurated the steel cycle.
