It is by far the most popular national park in Finland being visited almost 550000 times in 2018. The national park is located in the Lapland region, in the municipalities of Enontekiö, Kittilä, Kolari and Muonio. It was established in 2005, when Pallas-Ounastunturi National Park (suggested 1910 and established 1938, as one of the first national parks of the country[2]) was joined with Ylläs-Aakenus Protected Area. Fell chain across the National Park is almost {{convert|100|km|mi|-1}} long. The highest fell Taivaskero {{convert|807|m|ft}} masl is located in middle, in Pallas area. The high fells of the park are the southernmost place to see some arctic species in Finland. Most of the park consists of primeval forests and various types of muskeg. In 2016, the measurement station for air quality in the national park has been reported to have the cleanest air on the planet.[3] Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park has around {{convert|350|km|mi}} of marked hiking trails. The most popular hiking trail is {{convert|55|km|mi}} long Hetta–Pallas Trail, which goes mainly high up in the fells and takes 3-4 days to complete. It is also possible to hike Pallas-Ylläs Trail (69km) and Ylläs-Levi Trail (50km). There are 14 marked nature trails, which are easy to go around and provide information on the area’s natural features and culture. The shortest trails are around 2km long being fairly suitable for day trips. Summer hiking trails were opened for mountain biking in summer 2017.
