They prefer rocky reefs, inshore habitats such as eelgrass beds, estuaries and mangrove swamps where they can be found down to depths of around {{convert|20|m|ft}}. This species can reach a length of {{convert|71|cm|in}} FL though most do not exceed {{convert|35|cm|in}} TL. The maximum known weight of this species is recorded at {{convert|4|kg|lb}}. They have 11-12 fine dark tapering bars on a bluish-grey to greyish-brown body that fades to silvery-white below.[1] It is commercially important and is also popular as a game fish.[2] References
