Born in Leeds, England Wormley played as an out and out striker in a role more commonly known as a target man. His strength was very much in the air where he was also a very hard aggressive fearless striker with an incredible high work rate. Wormley was signed by Barnsley F.C. who where then managed by the famous Leeds United A.F.C and England striker Allan Clarke. He made his English league debut for Barnsley F.C. in 1979 against Bury F.C. at the young age of 17. Paul was also a contracted professional player with Huddersfield Town F.C from 1980-1981 but due to a serious knee injury/infection never made a first team appearance in the league, though did play regularly for them in the Central league and Northern Counties Trophy prior to and after the injury. Prior to turning professional, Wormley was a regular youth player with the Leeds United Youth team as well as Leeds City Boys from under 11 to under 15. He also represented Yorkshire School Boys at Under 15-17 and was an England Schoolboy trialist. Paul also played for the open age non-league side Yorkshire Amateur AFC from the mid to late 70's. Paul was offered contracts to play football in the North American National Soccer league with Tampa Bay Rowdies and Australia with Newcastle KB in mid 1981. Wormley chose to play in Australia and took up a later offer to play under the young aspiring coach Ken Worden who would become very successful in both Australia & Asia through the 1990's. Arriving at the young age of 19, Wormley played for Launceston Juventus now known as Launceston City in Tasmania scoring 19 goals in only 11 appearances, before moving with Ken Worden to Townsville Kern United in 1982. Paul was the top goal scorer for both his club and the league. Townsville won both the league championship and Ampol cup that year, the first Queensland club to do so. In 1983 Paul was signed by West Adelaide SC in the former National Soccer League (NSL) under the highly regarded Australian Coach Alan Vest. Alan Vest moved to Perth in 1984 and convinced Paul to move across to join him, though many NSL teams such as Heidelberg United FC and St George under the management of the Australian CoachFrank Arok were chasing his signature. It was through this halcyon period that Floreat Athena who Wormley played 7 seasons for, made their mark as the premier Soccer Club of Western Australia, winning numerous league Titles, Top Four Cups, Night Series Trophies and an unprecedented 3 D'Sorgna Cups in a row. Paul was the top scorer for the club in 5 of those seasons and also won the leagues top goal scorer in 1988. To this day the Floreat Athena FC remains a pivotal force, all due to the foundations that were laid from 1984 to 1989. In 1990 Wormley was signed by Eastern Sports Club in Hong Kong and also represented Lai Sun along with representing the Hong Kong National team. With offers to stay in Hong Kong and from Malaysia, Wormley had to return to Australia due to contractual commitments. On Wormley's return to Australia he played for Perth SC, Fremantle City FC. and ended his playing career at Inglewood United FC It was whilst at Inglewood United FC that Wormley undertook his coaching badge and became a player/coach with Inglewood United FC. Wormley also represented and was the leading striker for the "Western Australia State" team from 1984 through to 1990. He played against Nottingham Forrest, Millwall & Moscow Torpedo as well as competing in the DCM Tournament in New Delhi. Paul made more appearances for Western Australia than any other player In 1996 Wormley was appointed player/coach of Inglewood United FC. After 35 years of existence they won the Western Australia State League Championship. The first time in its long WA history. It was also the first time in history that a debutant coach had won the league title. Wormley was duly awarded the Western Australian Soccer Coach of the year award in 1996. Wormley became the Western Australian State Coach in late 1999 and coached them against the Malaysian U23's winning convincingly both times and also against the world famous Serbian team Red Star Belgrade. Wormley retired from football in 2002 to start his own business and is now the Proprietor & Director of a successful wholesale, import & export business named World Brands Australia Pty Ltd (www.wbaustralia.com.au). Marketing beverages and health products across all states of Australia, NZ & parts of Asia. Wormley continues to reside in City Beach, Western Australia with his family.
