People's Choice Credit Union was Australia's first financial institution to become a White Ribbon Accredited Workplace to fight domestic and financial abuse.[9] HistoryPeople's Choice Credit Union represents a series of credit unions that have merged since its 1949 origin, including the Northern Territory Credit Union.[10] In August 2009, it announced plans to merge with another credit union, Savings & Loans,[11] with the first post-merger branch opened in December 2010.[12] On 27 June 2011, members of the credit union voted to change the name to People's Choice Credit Union.[13] This change was adopted on 18 July 2011.[14] Structure and RegulationPeople's Choice is a credit union, a member-owned structure where its customers are also shareholders. This avoids the conflict of listed entities where directors owe their primary duty to maximise profits in the interest of their shareholders, potentially compromising treatment of customers.
