It grows to 2–2{{fraction|3|4}} inches in length, and usually hunts for insects and lizards at night. It is the only extant member of the genus Diplomesodon. In 2011, A. Cheke described a new and possibly extinct species based on a 19th-century manuscript: Diplomesodon sonnerati (Sonnerat's shrew).[3] References1. ^{{MSW3 Hutterer | pages = 255–256}} 2. ^{{Cite journal | author = Tsytsulina, K. | author2 = Formozov, N. | author3 = Sheftel, B. | last-author-amp = yes | title = Diplomesodon pulchellum | journal = The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species | volume = 2016 | page = e.T41448A115186837 | publisher = IUCN | date = 2016 | url = http://oldredlist.iucnredlist.org/details/41448/0 | doi = 10.2305/IUCN.UK.2016-3.RLTS.T41448A22293795.en | access-date = 12 December 2017}} 3. ^{{cite journal|last=Cheke|first=A.|title=Sonnerat's shrew - evidence for a new and possibly extinct species in an early 19th century manuscript (Mammalia: Soricidae).|journal=Journal of the Bombay Natural History Society|year=2011|volume=108|issue=2|pages=95–97|url=http://dodobooks.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Cheke-2012-Sonnerats-shrew.pdf}}
