It is located about {{convert|30|km|mi}} southwest of Catanzaro and about {{convert|20|km|mi}} northeast of Vibo Valentia. As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 1,224 and an area of {{convert|31.8|km2|mi2}}.[1] Polia's origins date back to 5th|8th{{Clarify|date=December 2012|reason=Is it 5th or 8th century BC?}} centuries BC when Greek pioneers coming from the Gulf of Squillace, located on the east coast of Calabria facing the Ionian Sea, decided to settle on a valley today known as Jammene (from {{Lang-el|iama-enes, fertile place}}) thus permitting to ease goods traffic between Greece and Rome through the Apennine Mountains.
