Preeti Sagar is a former Bollywood playback singer who won the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer for the song "Mero Gaam Katha Parey" from Manthan in 1978 and received nomination for the hit song "My Heart is Beating" from Julie (1975).[1](First English song in a Hindi movie. She also became a household name in India and for Indians abroad in regards to her nursery rhymes.

Career

Preeti is an accomplished, versatile singer with basic classical knowledge in music and singing. She began her  singing carrier with Jingles/ads and sang for a huge number of products like Liril, Brook Bond Tea ,Badshah Masala, Horlicks, Nirma, Amul, Vimal etc. and was known as the” Jingle Queen”. She shot to instant fame with her English song, My Heart is Beating, in the Bollywood movie Julie. She won a special Filmfare award for the same in the year 1975. She won the second Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer for the song "Mero Gaam Katha Parey" in the Bollywood movie Manthan, in 1978. She won the Gujarat State award for best female Singer for movie “Bhavni Bhavai” ,and Calcutta Journalist award for movie Bollywood movie “Katha”.  She has sung a number of songs in Bollywood movies, for Indian TV and for private Cassettes. One of her pop albums, “With Love”, containing 10 songs, was released in 8 Indian languages simultaneously. She has sung pop songs, Indian classical songs, devotional Bhajans, Folk songs, Ghazals etc. She has worked for famous Bollywood Film Directors and Music Directors like Rajesh Roshan,  Shyam Benegal, Shashi Kapoor, Vanraj Bhatia, Ravi, Bhappi Lahiri, Shanker Jaikishen, Jaidev, Anu Malik, Tahir Hussain, Shakti Samant, Sai Paranjape ,Ketan Desai etc. She appeared in hugely popular Indian TV serials like Phool Khile hain Gulshan Gulshan, Pop Times, Phulwari Bachchon Ki, Aarohi etc.

She is also well known for her contribution to the children's entertainment and education industry. She worked with “Sa Re Ga Ma” (earlier known as HMV) to create audio and video versions of several children's nursery rhymes collections in Hindi and English. She also created a Fairy Tales series. Her Nursery Rhyme collections “Nursey Rhymes”, “Phulwari Bachchon Ki”, became Platinum and “Fun & Frolic” turned gold.

She now runs her own production company called Angela Films, which undertakes advertising, short films, Public service advertisements, Corporate films, films for CSR and feature-film dubbing. In the 1990s, she produced the hit children's TV show, Phulwari Bachchon Ki, through Angela Films. In February 1992, she was invited by the International Music Festival at Tokyo, to represent India as its official entry. She was a part of the jury of the 52nd Indian National Film Awards.[2]

In 2010, her company produced and  launched in India UIDAI  project Aadhaar’s official theme film with the song, Yeh Hai Meri Pehchaan.[3]

Personal life

She comes from a Kayastha family of north India. Born and brought up in Mumbai, Preeti finished her schooling from Queen Mary’s School. Further, she acquired her Bachelor’s degree in Arts from St’ Xavier’s College, Mumbai. In 1977 she married Soami Saran, who was with a large Indian Multinational Corporate and later retired as its President, Alternative Technologies. She lives in Mumbai with her husband. She has two daughters, Aneesha and Akanksha. Her father, actor Moti Sagar, cousin of actor Motilal, appeared in films like Apna Ghar, Burma Road, Malhar and Chhoti Chhoti Baatein in 1950s and '60s.Her mother was the head of the English department at the Bhavan’s College Mumbai. Preeti has two sisters Niti, who wrote the song "Mero Gaam Katha Pare" for which she was nominated for a Filmfare award and Namita, who anchored Phulwari Bachchon Ki (1992–1999), produced by her father.[4][5]   

In addition to singing and production she takes active interest in social welfare activities.
