It is endemic to the north coast of Scotland, including Sutherland, Caithness and Orkney.[2] It is most closely related to Primula scandinavica that occurs in Norway and north-west Sweden, and more distantly to the Arctic species Primula stricta.[3] Primula scotica is easily distinguished from other British primulas by its bluish purple flowers. It flowers in May and often has a second flowering in July. In Orkney it is commonly seen on the sea cliffs at Yesnaby.
