It is the seat of the gmina (administrative district) called Gmina Prostki.[2] It lies approximately {{convert|15|km|mi|0}} south of Ełk and {{convert|128|km|mi|0|abbr=on}} east of the regional capital Olsztyn. Before 1945 the area was part of Germany (East Prussia). In 1656 the Battle of Prostken was fought nearby. In 2006 the village had a population of 3,000. Notable residents
