Construction started on August 16, 1999. Opened on October 12, 2003, it is the first newly built high-speed railway in China, costing CN¥15.7 billion (US$1.9 billion).[1] It is an electrified dual-track railway designed for a top speed of {{convert|200|km/h|abbr=on}}. By 2007 its top speed was increased to {{convert|250|km/h|abbr=on}}.
