The 1914 steel-frame building is in the Chicago school architectural style, and was designed by architect Mauran, Russell & Crowell. The building was the city's tallest when it opened,[2][3] and remains the second-largest building in downtown St. Louis by interior area, with almost {{convert|1200000|ft2|m2}} of space. The building was long home to the flagship store of the Famous-Barr chain of department stores — and the headquarters of its parent company May Department Stores — until the brand was bought by Macy's; the store was converted to a Macy's in 2006.[4] Macy's decided to sell the building in 2008[5] and closed the store in 2013.[6] In January 2017, the building was purchased for $20 million by Hudson Holdings, a National Historic Property Developer based in Delray Beach, Florida.[7][8] References1. ^{{NRISref|version=2010a}} {{Buildings in Missouri timeline}}{{Buildings in St. Louis timeline}}{{National Register of Historic Places}}{{Commons category}}2. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.emporis.com/application/?nav=building&id=127169&lng=3|title=Railway Exchange Building| work=Emporis |accessdate=2010-02-12}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=http://skyscraperpage.com/cities/?buildingID=12834|title=Railway Exchange Building| work=SkyscraperPage |accessdate=2010-02-12}} 4. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.builtstlouis.net/opos/railwayexchange.html|title=Railway Exchange Building|publisher=Built St. Louis|accessdate=2010-02-15}} 5. ^{{cite news |url=http://stlouis.bizjournals.com/stlouis/stories/2009/10/26/daily39.html |title=Bruce, Yackey seek TIF for Macy’s overhaul|last=Brown|first=Lisa R.|date=28 October 2009| work=The St. Louis Business Journal |accessdate=2010-02-15}} 6. ^http://www.stltoday.com/business/columns/building-blocks/macy-s-to-close-downtown-st-louis-store/article_a98b2c16-508a-5167-bed2-0b279c249039.html 7. ^{{cite news|last1=Bryant|first1=Tim|title=Developer buys Railway Exchange Building downtown|url=http://www.stltoday.com/business/columns/building-blocks/developer-buys-railway-exchange-building-downtown/article_8baa39bc-b523-5b1d-8f5a-cb1576f4063c.html|accessdate=28 February 2017|publisher=St. Louis Post-Dispatch|date=31 January 2017}} 8. ^{{Cite web|url=http://hudsonholdings.com/|title=Hudson Holdings - National Historic Property Developer|website=hudsonholdings.com|language=en-US|access-date=2017-05-30}} 8 : Commercial buildings on the National Register of Historic Places in Missouri|Buildings designated early commercial in the National Register of Historic Places|National Register of Historic Places in St. Louis|Skyscraper office buildings in St. Louis|Commercial buildings completed in 1914|Terracotta|Downtown St. Louis|Chicago school architecture in Missouri |
