Somaliland elects on national level a head of state (the president) and a legislature. The president is elected by the people for a five-year term. The Parliament (Baarlamaanka) has two chambers. The House of Representatives (Golaha Wakiilada) will have 82 members, elected for a five-year term. The House of Elders (Golaha Guurtida) will have 82 members, representing traditional leaders. Somaliland has a multi-party system, with numerous parties in which no one party often has a chance of gaining power alone, and parties must work with each other to form coalition governments. Latest electionsSomaliland general election, 2017{{Main|Somaliland general election, 2017}}General elections were to be held in Somaliland in June 2015 to elect the President and House of Representatives. In April 2013 the House of Elders voted to extend the parliamentary term for another two years, in order to align them with presidential elections. They were postponed in September 2015 due to the unpreparedness of the National elections Committee. They were to be held on the 27 March, 2017 but were once more postponed by 6 months due to a drought in the region. The elections to elect the President and Vice President were eventually held on 13 November, 2017. Incumbent President Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud Silanyo of the Peace, Unity, and Development Party (KULMIYE) did not run for a second term.
